Weed Alert! Wooly distaff thistle found in the Santa Monica Mountains

From the desk of Jo Kitz:

This past weekend, the Mountains Restoration Trust collected approximately 100 plants of wooly distaff thistle (Carthamus lanatus) in two sites at Stunt Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains. To date, no other site has been identified for wooly distaff thistle in the mountains. There is no indication of the source of the infestation. However, the growth pattern seems to stay localized due to the weight of the seed that drops close to the parent plant.

It is a B-rated plant on CDFA\'s noxious weed list and has a \"moderate\" rating on the Cal-IPC inventory.
